Preview: RSL v. Vancouver Whitecaps FC
SANDY, Utah – Real Salt Lake kicks off a three-game homestand on Saturday, when it hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC at 8:00 p.m. MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. Saturday’s contest will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN 700 and 102.3 La Gran D FM.
Real Salt Lake suffered a 1-0 loss in its last match, falling to LA Galaxy at StubHub Center on Saturday night. LA Galaxy FW Gyasi Zardes gave the home side the lead in the 20th minute through a strike at the top of the area that hit off the inside of the post and in. Despite creating a handful of chances throughout the match, Real Salt Lake was unable to find the back of the net to keep the Claret-and-Cobalt undefeated against LA in 2014. RSL GK Nick Rimando put in a fantastic performance in his second game back with the club, stopping a penalty kick in the last minute of stoppage time for his 22nd career PK save. Real Salt Lake now sits second in the Western Conference with a 7-4-7 record and total of 28 points.
Saturday’s matchup between RSL and Vancouver will be the second regular season meeting between the two sides. In the first encounter this year, the Claret-and-Cobalt played Vancouver to a wild 2-2 draw at Rio Tinto Stadium on April 26. RSL stormed out to an early lead with goals from FW Joao Plata in the second minute and FW Alvaro Saborio in the ninth. RSL held the 2-0 edge for most of the rest of the game, but conceded twice in the final stages, first in the 86th and again in the final minute of stoppage time to draw 2-2.
Saturday’s contest will provide RSL’s longest-tenured player, Rimando with the opportunity to tie the all-time MLS shutout record. The 35-year-old goalkeeper has 111 shutouts, one clean sheet shy of retired goalkeeper Kevin Hartman who holds the record at 112.
Real Salt Lake has a successful history against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, with the Claret-and-Cobalt posting a 4-2-3 all-time record against the Cascadia side. Real Salt Lake is undefeated against the ‘Caps in the Beehive State, posting a 3-0-2 all-time record against Vancouver at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL is 4-1-3 at home this year.
