The Weekly: RSL to close road trip at Chivas USA on Sunday
REAL SALT LAKE TO CLOSE ROAD TRIP ON SUNDAY AT WESTERN CONFERENCE FOE CHIVAS USA
Real Salt Lake (5-5-2, 17 points, West #3) will close its three-game road trip on Sunday night, when it will take on Western Conference foe Chivas USA (3-5-2, 11 points, West #9) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Sunday’s match will be broadcast live on CW30, ESPN700 and 102.3 La Gran D FM/1600 AM. CW30 will air the 30-minute Ford Postgame Show immediately after the match; ESPN700 will air an hour-long pregame show before the game and will broadcast an hour-long postgame following the contest.
Real Salt Lake is 1-0-0 against Chivas USA this year, getting a second half goal from MF Javier Morales and a late penalty save from GK Nick Rimando to down the Southern California side 1-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium on April 20.
RSL is 10-10-4 in the regular season against Chivas USA, posting a 5-7-1 mark against the Rojiblancos at the Home Depot Center. The team’s 10 wins against Chivas USA are tied for the most against any other club in RSL history. The Claret-and-Cobalt has been very successful against Chivas USA in recent years, going 7-2-1 against the Goats since the start of the 2009 season.
RSL OPENS ROAD TRIP WITH MIDWEEK WIN AT NEW ENGLAND, SATURDAY LOSS AT MONTREAL
Real Salt Lake went 1-1-0 in the first two games of its road trip, beating the New England Revolution 2-1 last Wednesday before falling 3-2 at the Montreal Impact on Saturday.
RSL came from behind at New England, getting a 77th minute goal from FW Devon Sandoval – the first of his MLS career – and an 89th minute tally from FW Olmes Garcia to go ahead 2-1 before Rimando preserved the win with a penalty kick save in second half stoppage time. RSL DF Carlos Salcedo was mistakenly identified and given a second yellow card and sent off for a handball to give the Revs the penalty kick; the league rescinded Salcedo’s yellow and reapplied it to Claret-and-Cobalt DF Tony Beltran on Friday.
Unfortunately, RSL was on the other end of things at Montreal, getting a 77th minute goal from captain Kyle Beckerman to take a 2-1 lead before conceding in the 80th and 93rd minutes to fall 3-2 at Stade Saputo. Montreal’s equalizer was particularly painful as it appeared that goalscorer FW Marco Di Vaio was in an offside position when the final ball was played to him.
RSL DF CARLOS SALCEDO BECOMES FIRST RSL-ARIZONA ACADEMY PRODUCT TO START IN MLS
Days after becoming the first RSL-Arizona Academy product to play in MLS when he came on as a late sub in RSL’s 2-0 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 4, 19-year-old DF Carlos Salcedo set another milestone, becoming the first RSL-AZ product to start a MLS match in the Claret-and-Cobalt’s win at New England.
Salcedo nearly made it the full 90 minutes at Gillette Stadium, getting ejected in second half stoppage time after being mistakenly identified and shown a second yellow card. MLS rescinded Salcedo’s second yellow card on Friday and reapplied it to DF Tony Beltran after the referee from Wednesday’s game admitted his mistake to the league.
RSL MF LUIS GIL WINS MLS GOAL OF THE WEEK
MLS announced on Friday that Real Salt Lake MF Luis Gil took home MLS Goal of the Week honors for Week 10. The U.S. Under-20 international was honored for his headed opener early in the second half of RSL’s 2-0 home win over Vancouver on May 4. RSL FW Joao Plata and Rimando were given assists on the play.
RSL GK ATTINELLA & MF MARTINEZ START LOAN SPELLS ON THE RIGHT FOOT
Real Salt Lake GK Jeff Attinella and MF Enzo Martinez have started their short-term loans to second-division NASL sides brightly.
Attinella – who went on loan to the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers last Wednesday – started and played 90 minutes to help the Strikers to its first win of the season on Saturday, making six saves to help the 10-man South Florida side to a 2-1 win over Minnesota United FC. Attinella and the Strikers will travel to Texas to take on the San Antonio Scorpions on Saturday.
Sent on loan on April 30, Martinez has made two substitute appearances for the Carolina RailHawks. The University of North Carolina product scored in his RailHawks debut, notching a fantastic late equalizer in Carolina’s 2-2 draw at Minnesota on May 4 before coming on in the 63rd minute of Carolina’s 5-2 win over San Antonio on Saturday.
