RSL News Stand: Thursday, March 8, 2012
Just two days remain until Real Salt Lake kicks off its 2012 campaign in Los Angeles, which means the last of the RSL and/or MLS season previews are hitting the internet as we type! Also make sure you check out the reaction from last night’s CCL Quarterfinal match-ups involving three MLS sides and interviews with ‘keeper Nick Rimando and GM Garth Lagerwey from yesterday’s “Bill Riley Show” on ESPN 700 …
RSL Quick Kicks
- MLS Commissioner Don Garber will hold a media teleconference on this afternoon at 2:00 pm MT, and you can listen in live on MLSsoccer.com Channel 1. The Commissioner will take questions from the media about the preseason and this weekend's First Kick, presented by Dick's Sporting Goods, including the Dallas-New York match on Sunday (1:00 pm MT, NBC Sports Network).
- You can probably count the Rio Tinto Stadium Operations Department and RSL coaching staff among those not rooting for a switch to the international fall through spring calendar, as those two groups combined yesterday morning to shovel two inches of fresh snow off the new America First Field pitch. Their diligent work allowed RSL to get in a two-hour session at the new Sandy facility, which will host the squad’s final Utah-based session prior to Saturday’s season opener today from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- The pundits aren’t the only ones picking the LA Galaxy to run away with the Supporters Shield this season … the robots are as well! The folks at EA Sports ran a simulation of the 2012 MLS campaign through its popular FIFA ’12 title and found the Galaxy (22-3-9, 75 pts.) to be a comfortable winner in the Western Conference over Real Salt Lake, which likely wouldn’t complain with its projected 19-4-11 record and 68 points. FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders FC were well back in a third-place tie on 50 points, while New York (66 pts) emerged as the virtual winner of the Eastern Conference over Columbus and Sporting Kansas City, both sitting on 59 fake points. In true “Team is the Star” fashion, the game predicted no double-digit scorer would be involved in RSL’s projected 61-goal haul.
