Real Monarchs Secure Late Victory

ARLINGTON, Texas (Friday, April 21, 2023) – Real Monarchs (2-3-0, 6 points) claimed a late victory in stoppage time against Western Conference opponents North Texas SC when Moses Nyeman netted his first goal for Real Monarchs while helping the team claim their very first victory against North Texas.

North Texas SC were quick to find their footing in the opening minutes of the match, quickly controlling possession. Despite North Texas making multiple attacking runs into Real Monarchs defensive third in the first 25 minutes of the match, the Monarchs backline and Gavin Beavers remained steadfast.

Both teams were unable to create significant chances in the first-half of the match due to both teams' defensive prowess and conservative play. The first shot of the match did not come until the 24th minute when North Texas SC’s Carl Sainté launched a shot from 35 yards out that was successfully blocked by Beavers. North Texas continued to pressure the Monarchs defensive third resulting in Omar Alba committing a foul which awarded him a yellow card in the 26th minute. Only three shots occurred in the first-half of the match, none of which were on target attempts. The first-half concluded in a 0-0 stalemate between the Monarchs and North Texas.

Immediately at the second half whistle Real Monarchs began to take the offensive and created a flurry of chances. In the 47th minute Delentz Pierre attempted a header that almost slotted into goal but was saved by an outstretched Antonio Carrera of North Texas SC. Griffin Dillon had the first shot on target of the match a few moments later in the 58th minute, but the shot was easily saved by Carrera. The Monarchs were forced to make a substitution in the 60th minute after Cayne Madhlangove suffered an injury, resulting in RSL Academy defender Nicholas Nobles making an appearance at right-back.

The Monarchs continued to make aggressive runs into North Texas SC’s defensive third late into the second-half. In the 72nd minute Bertin Jacquesson took a right-footed shot from outside the box that was saved by North Texas. In an attempt to have more attacking personnel on the field, fullback Luis Rivera was substituted for center back Erik Holt in the 73rd minute for the Real Monarchs. Jacquesson had another close chance in the 75th minute on the counter attack but his header was again saved by Carrera.

In the first three minutes of stoppage time Tyrone Mondi was able to draw a foul against North Texas SC’s Amet Korça resulting in Real Monarchs being awarded a free kick just outside the 18 yard box. Moses Neyman was elected to take the free kick and lofted the ball into the top right corner of the goal past an outstretched Antonio Carrera, resulting in a stoppage time game winner for the Real Monarchs.

UP NEXT: Real Monarchs will return home to the Beehive State to face Portland Timbers 2 next weekend on Sunday, April 30 at 4:00 pm M.T at Zions Bank Stadium.
