Senior Vice President of Business Operations; General Manager of ESPN700 Sports Sports Radio

John Kimball is one of a handful of remaining “RSL Originals,” entering his eighth year with Real Salt Lake after transferring from a former sister company, SportsWest Productions, where he had been the Regional Sales Manager since 2003. Mr. Kimball, originally the Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships for Real Salt Lake, currently supervises all corporate sponsorship and ticketing sales, marketing, operations, and business aspects for the club and its state-of-the-art home, Rio Tinto Stadium.

Since Real Salt Lake’s inception, Kimball has recruited several of the Utah community’s innovative companies to invest in Major League Soccer’s Utah side, and guided numerous national brands to activate their interests in concert with RSL’s athletic, corporate and community initiatives. Kimball’s team has seen outstanding growth from RSL’s inaugural season to present, more than tripling overall revenue of sponsor commitments from 2006 to present with a 50% annual compound increase, and establishing the Utah side as a league leader in both sponsor and ticket revenue.

Mr. Kimball simultaneously serves as the General Manager of ESPN700 Sports Radio, the Utah DMA’s #1 sports-talk station, successfully negotiating long-term deals for the station to be Utah’s home of the Worldwide Leader’s compelling programming, as well as carriage deals for University of Utah football and basketball, Real Salt Lake soccer, as well as other local and national programming.

During the past three years at ESPN 700, Kimball successfully integrated the sales staffs for the RSL team, Rio Tinto Stadium and the station, utilizing Real Salt Lake’s MLS Cup title and ESPN 700’s ESPN Radio affiliation to usher in a new era of Utah sports marketing. The growth of ESPN 700 continues in 2012, with the highly-rated mix of national ESPN properties, the critically-acclaimed Dan Patrick Show and local voice “Bill Riley” delivering the InterMountain West’s most compelling sports radio offerings.

Prior to his appointment as Senior Director of Corporate Sponsorship at RSL’s launch, Mr. Kimball marketed and negotiated regional media and merchandising contracts for the Mountain West Conference (MWC), Western Athletic Conference (WAC), and the Big Sky football and basketball conferences for SportsWest Productions. Mr. Kimball also formed the Synergy Media Group, where he designed and executed marketing strategies for local and national clients.

Previously, Mr. Kimball served as a sales manager of KSL News Radio 1160 for its national, regional and local sales from 1993 to 2003. While at KSL, he was also the sales manager of Television and Radio Sports Marketing and sold contracts for NFL Football, the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games, NCAA Basketball, and Major League Baseball (MLB). Kimball also supervised KSL’s sports marketing relationships with Brigham Young University (BYU) Football and Basketball.

An avid sports enthusiast, Mr. Kimball earned a bachelors degree from BYU in Communications/Media Sales. The Utah native resides in Little Cottonwood Canyon with his wife and three children.
