Heroes Among Us - August 2013
Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Kellie Evans as the recipient of the “Hero Among Us” honor on August 10th 2013. Kellie owns a hairstyling college in Lindon, Utah where she spends her days teaching students the skills they will need to have successful careers in hair styling. Kellie goes beyond teaching her students the ins and outs of hairstyling; she also teaches them lessons in compassion and humanity. Once a month, for the past twelve years, Kellie has gathered her students, her equipment and dozens of sack lunches and headed to Salt Lake to help the homeless. Kellie gives each person a meal, a person to talk to and a haircut. These are simple things that could be a huge difference to someone in need, especially if that person is looking for a job. Once almost homeless herself she knows what it feels like to be down on her luck and this knowledge has ignited her passion to help others in need.

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Ryan Johnson as the recipient of the "Hero Among Us" honor on August 24th 2013. Ryan is a devoted volunteer and board member of Hand in Hand Outdoors, an organization dedicated to providing outdoor experiences to disabled veterans, children and other people with disabilities. Volunteers for Hand in Hand Outdoors coordinate fishing, boating and other outdoor adventures for those who would otherwise not have the opportunity. Their boat "Freedom's Dream" is specially designed to accommodate wheelchairs. Ryan knows first firsthand the challenges that can be faced by a person in a wheelchair. Ryan was paralyzed in an accident as a young boy and has been in a wheelchair ever since. Despite this he is very active in his volunteer work, scheduling boating trips for disabled children and joining them on their trips.

Real Salt Lake and American Express are proud to recognize Jody and Budd Rich and Roy Hoyt as the recipients of the “Hero Among Us” honor on August 30th 2013. Jody and Roy are two hurricane principles who took a month of their summer to ride bikes across America in order to raise money for their schools. The pair started in San Diego California and biked 3,000 miles to St Augustine Florida. Their organization PAACE, Principles Across America for Computers in Education, raised over $30,000 that will go toward much needed supplies and computers for their respective schools. Over the 30 days they were on the road supporters could track their progress and donate on PAACES’ facebook page. Jody and Roy wanted to not only raise money but to show their students the commitment they have for each of their schools. Jody and Roy could not have done this without the help of Jody’s father, Budd Rich. Budd is an 81 year old man who joined the principles on the road following them in his truck carrying food, water and bike supplies for their journey.
