Heroes Among Us - April 2014
Real Salt Lake And American Express are proud to recognize Megan Healy as the recipient of the “Hero Among Us” honor on April 16th 2014. Megan Healy is a senior at Logan high school. She is an outstanding student and a tremendous athlete. Megan recently finished her senior season with the Logan high swim team where she helped lead the team to a successful season. Her many hours of practice in the pool and her job as a lifeguard helped prepare her for an even bigger event that would take place in her life. Last February, during a family vacation in Oceanside, California she was able to use her swimming abilities to save the lives of her uncle and her 15 year old cousin. While swimming in the ocean they drifted far from shore and decided it would be best to head in. Despite their best efforts to swim back only our hero was able to make it. When Megan returned to shore she turned to see both her uncle and cousin struggling to stay afloat 75 yards out. She immediately jumped into action swimming out to save her cousin and then returning to rescue her uncle. Thanks to her preparation she was able to stay calm under pressure and save her loved ones.

Real Salt Lake And American Express are proud to recognize Ryan and Amanda Bowler as the recipients of the “Hero Among Us” honor on April 16th 2014. Ryan and Amanda grew up playing sports learning valuable life lessons along the way. When they had kids of their own they wanted these same experiences for their kids along with their friends. Unfortunately, they quickly noticed that many youth didn’t have the opportunity to participate in sports because it was not an option for them financially. Their desire for every child to have this opportunity came to fruition two and a half years ago when they created the charity organization amp athletics. The average cost for a child to participate in a sport is $60 per person. Knowing this, amp’s focus is soliciting donations from individuals which allow the organization to provide sports scholarships for elementary school-age children. In addition to the donations, amp hosts fundraisers, works with corporate sponsors and partners with recreation departments around Salt Lake and Utah valley to ensure funds are readily available to assist kids. Since the inception of the charity they have been able to help hundreds of kids participate in the city’s sports leagues.
